The Necessities for Your First International Flight By Harper Melton

My blog today will be incredibly helpful for everyone who may not yet have traveled out of the country, but plan on doing so soon. Today, I'm going to share with you the top necessities that you will need on your first international flight. Now, some of these items may be no brainers, but since this is your first time on an international flight, I am going to assume that you have no idea what you will need. I'm going to go over what I personally love to have on me and what I consider absolute essentials and share them with all the new international flyers out there that want to travel but have no idea what they need to bring.

Essential Items to Bring On Your First International Flight

After COVID, the number one item on the list is, of course, sanitizing wipes.

Antibacterial wipes are perfect for wiping down germ-infested seats on an airplane. I hate to break it to you but think about how many people sit in those seats. You will need sanitizing wipes to wipe down your seat, your belt buckle, your table tray and the screen in front of you that you're going to be touching to watch movies or listen to music.

Kleenex body wipes are another necessary wipe for long, international flights. Unlike

sanitizing wipes, these wipes are for your body. They can be used on your face, your hands and other body parts and are gentler for your body to help keep you clean. For instance, if you have a long layover and you are feeling gross, I would recommend going into a bathroom stall and wiping down your face and hands to feel cleaner. I find that being clean helps you sleep better on your final flight.

I have one more wipe to recommend for any makeup wearers out there. First, always remember to take your makeup off before you fall asleep on an international flight. Leaving makeup on is not good for your skin because it will clog your pores. Before you land and dive into a very intense travel day, wipe your face with a nice fresh facial wipe. Make sure the cleansing towelettes are made specifically for your face because your face is more sensitive than other parts of your body. Moreover, a facial wipe can double as a Kleenex tissue and with the pressurized cabin, nasal cavities tend to run, and you’ll want to blow your nose.

Next, you will need either perfume or some sort of fabric spray. During that long

layover where you feel gross and you’ve face down, but you still feel like your clothes need a refresher, here’s what I recommend. You can always change outfits during a long layover. Keep the second outfit in your carryon so its easy to get too. Always bring a change of socks. Something as simple as changing your socks before you go on a long flight can make you feel a lot more relaxed and allows you to drift off to sleep.

A specific type of travel pillow can make that ridiculously long flight rather enjoyable. I

highly recommend the Trtl Travel Neck Pillow. This pillow is fantastic in that it has hidden internal support that keeps your head upright while sleeping. When you wake up, your neck is pain free and your hair looks great. I usually add an eye mask to make the sleeping ensemble complete. The last time that I flew using the pillow and mask, I had the most amazing sleep ever!

The next few items that I am about to list are not essentials, but I find they make an

international flight more pleasurable.

  1. Earplugs are important if you want to block out that screaming baby or really any other unwanted sounds and just sleep.

  2. A sleeping aid like melatonin will help you sleep if you have a hard time sleeping in public places or just don't think you'll be able to get to sleep. Please note, however, that sleep aids can mess up your natural sleep patterns, which can make it difficult to get into a routine once you reach your destination.

  3. Headphones are important if you want to connect to your Apple iPhone. However, if you want to connect to the regular headphone jack at your seat, you’ll need to bring a separate pair, however, you will find on many international flights (especially over to Asia) they use a different kind of prong to connect to the television, and the airline often provides you with those headphones. Note that the free pair that the airline provides are often uncomfortable for an extended period of time.

  4. Aquaphor or Chapstick are added after you discover that the pressurized cabins dry your lips out.

  5. Bring hand sanitizer. A little bit of hand sanitizer is important to use after using the restroom or before a meal.

  6. Bring a jacket or sweater because it gets cold on those flights. Wearing long comfortable layers will come in handy if your cabin is particularly cold. The airline often provides blankets, although sometimes you will have to ask for one.

  7. Finally, your passport identification and your money should always be secured during your flight.

This concludes what I have for you today about the necessities that you will need to have before boarding your first international flight. Feel free to post any questions that you have before boarding and safe travels! Next week tune in to what you should pack clothing wise for your first international trip.
